With warmer weather and holiday weekends on the horizon, summer parties are common ways to spend time with family and friends. Will they continue to be a popular way to entertain this year? We reached out to our network in the US and UK to get their take on top Summer Holidays, including their purchase plans!

Taking a look at last year, almost 70% of Americans surveyed attended or hosted a gathering during at least one holiday, and this year doesn’t look to be much different. While holiday picnics were less prevalent in the UK last year, there’s interest in participating in more BBQs this summer.

It’s Not Summer Unless You’ve Fired up the Grill!

Our consumers are ready to BBQ this summer, and their spending plans prove it! The strong majority will either spend more compared to last year (around four-in-ten in each country) or “about the same amount” (54-56%), with six-in-ten shoppers in the US planning to spend at least $60 or more for each party they attend, of which 29% will spend more than $100!

For both countries, “shop-as-I-go” is the leading purchase strategy when it comes to BBQs, with 82% in the US and 75% in the UK admitting they will purchase items while they are perusing grocery stores. Americans will pay more attention to what’s on sale with almost half stocking up ahead of time and will plan for items requested by the host. In the UK, consumers are more likely to purchase items the week of the event, with an eye towards purchasing ingredients for tried and true recipes.

Additionally, one-in-four US shoppers will purchase spiked seltzers, juice, and/or hard liquor with margaritas coming out as the chosen cocktail, while hard liquor, cocktails, and fixings for gin and tonics are popular choices for UK residents.

As for where the drinks will be poured, almost all Americans will buy disposable cups for their parties, with Solo the leading brand of choice.

Making the Most of the Warm Summer Temps

Food isn’t the only hot item this summer! New clothes also top the list of summer items to buy for both countries, followed by new bathing suits and cover ups. Items to upgrade outdoor entertaining (patio furniture, lawn games, etc), along with grilling accessories and/or a new grill are also hot products consumers have their eye on.

Don’t miss your chance to showcase your offers to an audience of shoppers who are clearly ready for a great summer of grilling and looking their best! Summer is also a popular season for travel…stay tuned for our upcoming post on travel behaviors and trends for the upcoming summer season.
