Twenty years ago, we relied on magazines and the occasional TV interview to stay up to date with our favorite celebrities. I can’t be the only one who got excited every time a new issue of Teen People or Jane arrived in the mail. Today, social media allows us on-demand glimpses into the lives of celebrities,  serving as an uncensored platform for the latest “it” guys and girls to share their thoughts on everything from White Claw to immigration law.

We surveyed 1,312 American social media users to get a pulse on whether discussion of hot button issues is welcomed on social media. Read on for perceptions on celebrities weighing in on current events via social media, the amount of political coverage today, and whether politics is spilling into pop culture (and if that’s acceptable).
