Travel Cancellations Were Widespread
In our recent partnered research with Remesh, we learned that 77% canceled travel plans because of COVID-19. With the “second holiday season of the pandemic” approaching and vaccines widely available, we found ourselves curious about whether there will be an uptick in holiday travel this year. We surveyed 1,116 of our members to get a pulse on whether they’ll be packing their suitcases this holiday season.
There’s Pent Up Desire to Travel
Perhaps not surprisingly, travel-related activities were identified as the “most missed” during the pandemic. Specifically, those we surveyed were nearly three times more likely to say they missed taking a vacation or traveling to visit family and friends than they missed attending concerts/sporting events in person or going to the movies.
Holiday Travel Plans Looking More Likely This Year
With the festive season upon us, it appears there will be more seats around the table than last year; around half who typically drive 50+ miles to visit others over the holidays and/or typically stay in a hotel “more likely” to do so this year than last year (most of those remaining are “about as likely” to do so as last year). When it comes to flying to visit family/friends, 42% are“more likely” to do so than last year and another 36% are “about as likely”.
Don’t count out vacations over the winter holidays either; 50% of those who typically take a road trip for a vacation during the season of light are more likely to do so than last year and 44% have a similar sentiment when it comes to flying for a pure vacation.
