Tis the season to spend, spend and spend some more. But a new survey by Swagbucks found how much we’re dishing out on Christmas gifts is a mystery, a truth we keep from our spouses.

Nearly 50 percent of Americans don’t tell their partner how much they’re spending.

And here’s why: debt.

Sixty-three percent of Americans rack up holiday debt. For most it’s about $250 to $500 worth. But 8 percent of people end up owing more than $1,000. And 1/3 of us are able to pay it off in under a month.
