A little more than a year ago, a bowl of cereal and a turn of his head changed Paul Wassenaar, a professional BMX rider’s, life forever.
As he was spooning the cereal in his mouth, his father noticed something unusual on his neck: A lump, that on touch felt hard — the exact kind of lump that is every parent’s nightmare.
After a trip to the doctor and then another doctor, the diagnosis came back: Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma — a diagnosis that would at least put a pause to his BMX career and leave him banned from the thing he’d been doing since he was a toddler: ride.
With cancer behind him, Wassenaar is turning his focus back to the track now. He switched coaches to focus more on the Olympics. And he’s eating better — something that helped him put on weight and muscle not only when he was fighting cancer but after.
