In recent weeks, travel has become another item added to the mounting list of things taken for granted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether for business or pleasure, many people have seen their trip plans unravel. We recently surveyed 1,592 of our members aged 18 to 69 to gain a sense of how far out travel is being canceled and what types of trips & events will be missed out on this season.
Nearly half of those we surveyed (48%) had a trip scheduled between April and September. Of those with trips slated for April-June, 60% indicated their trip has been canceled or postponed. One respondent elaborates: “My trip was planned to take my daughter to museums and the zoo in and outside of Boston. We don’t know if those things will be open in June so we have canceled our trip.”
Trips postponed or canceled included not only domestic travel, but also international getaways:
“I chose to cancel due to concerns of COVID-19 and travel was banned to Europe from the US.” (Female, 25-29)
“The trip was to go to Disneyland with my family to celebrate my nephew’s graduation, but with schools closed he won’t graduate in June.” (Male, 30-34)
“I was going to Croatia and the UK – I was planning it for celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary — worried about coronavirus — on the plane and airports for many hours – sad and upsetting – can’t get full refunds.” (Female, 50-59)
“COVID-19 caused Disney to cancel the Star Wars half marathon, and although the resort/parks haven’t yet extended the closure, we canceled.” (Female, 35-39)
However, when it comes to excursions in July-September, travelers are more inclined to take a “wait and see” approach.
